Year 7 to 9 Curriculum Outline

Subjects in the Middle School are arranged into Core and Specialist subjects.

Core Subjects
Core subjects offered are mandatory for all students in Year 7 to 9 to complete the following:
• English, EAL or Accelerated English
• Mathematics or Accelerated Mathematics
• Science or Accelerated Science
• Humanities
• Health and Physical Education

Specialist Subjects
At Year 7, 8 and 9 students are assigned to specialist subjects which are run for one semester only. Specialist subjects are designed for students to have the opportunity to be exposed to a broad range of Art and Technology subjects and encourage the exploration of new skills, talents and interests in preparation for subject selection in the Senior School.

All Year 8 students continue with their language learned in Year 7 for the full school year.

At Year 9 students may elect to continue with LOTE however, this will run throughout the year.

All Year 9 students also choose an Enrichment Elective each semester which is linked with Year 9 Core subjects.

Senior School

Year 10 to 12 Curriculum Outline

South Oakleigh College provides all students with My Careers Portfolio counselling so as to inform their Senior School subject and career choices. At the conclusion of senior schooling they are assisted with VTAC applications and the pursuit of their pathway, be it University, TAFE, employment or other.

We have high expectations of all our students, encouraging them to perform at their academic best whether they are going to University or accessing other pathways. South Oakleigh College offers a truly innovative VCE Program across the three levels. Years 10 & 11 students study VCE Units 1 & 2 subjects and Years 11 & 12 students study VCE 3 & 4 subjects.

Apart from Study Scores and ATARs, this system offers genuine acceleration and enrichment opportunities for all, as well as an opportunity for students to complete the VCE over three years.

Students may enrol in additional Units not offered by South Oakleigh College through other VCE providers e.g.

Students are allocated a school support staff member and their study sessions are included in their timetable.
