International Student Program
South Oakleigh College offers a successful and recognised International Student Program catering for a diverse market.
The College provides a supportive and stimulating environment for all students with a comprehensive curriculum designed to equip students for success in further education, work, and life in a fast-changing modern world.
Our international students have successfully completed VCE and are now pursuing tertiary education, including Commerce, Science, Engineering and Design at universities and colleges.

Student’s Academic Program:
Students who have enrolled with us and who have not completed their IELTS attend an English Language Centre to undertake intensive English Language classes with the key focus to prepare them to go into mainstream classes. Our International Student Coordinator and Assistant support students whilst at the Language Centre as part of the transition into our school.
Students have the opportunity to study over 25 VCE subjects, this may include the students own language at VSL (Victorian School of Languages on a Saturday morning, University level studies as well as technically orientated studies. Senior Year 11 and 12 VCE classes are generally smaller and average 22 students per class. EAL classes are usually less than 20 students. Students are provided with extensive support to assist them in choosing an appropriate VCE program.
How do we support students?
We pride ourselves on our open door policy of student support. Students are encouraged to seek assistance whenever they need it:
We have an International team which comprises our International Student Coordinator and his Assistant, two additional multicultural aides and our EAL teachers. Students are also supported by our Head of House, Mentor teacher, Careers/Pathways Coordinator, Wellbeing Team and the Sub School Leaders.
Homework Club Tuesday and Thursday:
South Oakleigh College provides a ‘Homework Club’ specifically for International students. These classes are available from 3:30-4:30 and are compulsory for all International students to attend as part of our program. Particular focus will be given to the study of understanding the English Language as well as support in all areas of study. Additional support will be provided in English which will include Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening. Students will be encouraged to take part in communicative activities, to seek regular assistance and to draft written work. Trained English teachers and a Qualified Assistant are available during these sessions.
Our International Student Assistant attends some of the classes with senior International students and provides one to one assistance during class time.
International students are also encouraged to join the student leadership program where our focus is to improve the leadership skills of our 21st Century leaders.
Local Area Information
South Oakleigh is a residential suburb located about 15 kilometres south-east of Melbourne’s central business district. Its local government area is the City of Monash. South Oakleigh is essentially a residential suburb settled by immigrants during the mid-twentieth century and continues to grow as a multicultural area.
South Oakleigh is serviced by Huntingdale and Oakleigh railway stations. Train and bus public transport offer easy access to all areas of Melbourne. As part of the Dingley Arterial Project, Old Dandenong Road was connected to South Road thereby linking western suburbs along South Road (such as Bentleigh, Moorabbin, and Brighton) with suburbs to the east of South Oakleigh.
Parks and Gardens:
Natural local features include parks and reserves, wetlands and golf courses, with South Oakleigh located in Southeastern Melbourne’s famous Sandbelt, surrounded by three noted private golf clubs: Metropolitan, Huntingdale and Commonwealth.
After the completion of the South Road extension, Mavis Hutter Reserve was created and contains outdoor gym facilities, a playground, and a granitic sand track which creates a circuit in the park. Other parks in South Oakleigh are Dales and Talbot Parks, Davies Reserve, Bald Hill Reserve and Warrawee Park, all close to South Oakleigh College.
The Olympic Ice Skating Centre is located across the road from South Oakleigh College and other sporting facilities nearby include – GESAC, Oakleigh Sport and Recreation Centre, Oakleigh Indoor Sports Centre and the College itself is used by many sporting clubs offering basketball, soccer and cricket on the weekends and after school.
Shopping and Dining
The Oakleigh shopping precinct, located 2 kilometres from the College is home to more than 280 retailers and service providers. The lively outdoor shopping strip and Oakleigh Central shopping centre comprises a host of food and dining outlets, fashion and beauty stores, giftware and homeware outlets, professional services, and more.
Chadstone Shopping Centre, known as the fashion capital comprises 500 stores, including the new state-of-the-art HOYTS Cinema Complex and is located 5 kilometres and a 15 minute bus ride from the College.
Westfield Southland a retail complex with approximately 400 retailers is located in the suburb of Cheltenham, 8 kilometres from the College and easy to reach by bus.
Monash University is 2 kilometres to the north east of the College and other tertiary institutions including Melbourne University, Deakin University and Holmesglen Institute of TAFE are easily accessible by public transport.
We offer more than just an academic program:
Our aim is for all our students to leave our College with more than just academic results. We aim to support them to develop vital skills needed for their life outside school such as: Leadership skills, teamwork, resilience, organisational skills and empathy. These skills are widely sought after by tertiary providers and future employers.
We also offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities, including: overseas tours to USA NASA space , Cambodia volunteer Program, Japan and Greece and other local and national camps. A wide range of sports as well as special programs and competitions. The following are some examples of National competitions, Mathematics, Science, English, and Geography.
Other programs on offer include: Chess club, construction Club (3D printing), Coding, Drama, choir, student leadership programs, music club, Physics fortnightly lectures to Melbourne University
