The dedicated and skilled teaching staff at South Oakleigh Secondary College ensure that the academic needs and well-being of every student is addressed and catered for. We aim to provide students with a challenging and stimulating work environment, encourage and extend their strengths and talents and give them every opportunity to achieve their goals.

Our challenge as a school is to cater for the needs of all our students, thus accelerating the learning of all. Our key to ‘raising this bar’ is targeted improvement in Literacy and Numeracy underpinned by differentiation and excellent teaching and learning practice.

To maximise student success, we are embedding a culture of effective teaching based on academic research into best practice. We have implemented a whole school approach to Literacy as we believe that developing a student’s literacy skills is fundamental to creating a powerful learner. This approach includes Marzano’s Domain specific Academic Vocabulary program and the use of non-fiction writing templates in all subjects.

‘It is essential that teachers recognise and build on their students’ literacy skills and understanding within domains, ensuring all students are able to access the academic language and text types, domain specific vocabulary, concepts and behaviours required to be successful at school.’

The use of student data informs our teaching with NAPLAN and Progressive Achievement testing results being used diagnostically to target key areas in English/EAL and Maths classes.
