South Oakleigh is a residential suburb located about 15 kilometres south-east of Melbourne’s central business district. Its local government area is the City of Monash. South Oakleigh is essentially a residential suburb settled by immigrants during the mid-twentieth century and continues to grow as a multicultural area.
South Oakleigh is serviced by Huntingdale, Oakleigh and Clayton railway stations. Train and bus public transport offers easy access to all areas of Melbourne. With only a 40 minute train ride into the city, South Oakleigh is the perfect middle-ground between city and suburbs.
As part of the Dingley Arterial Project, Old Dandenong Road was connected to South Road thereby linking western suburbs along South Road (such as Bentleigh, Moorabbin, and Brighton) with suburbs to the east of South Oakleigh. Making travel between the south and west sides of Melbourne a breeze.
Natural local features include parks and reserves, wetlands and golf courses, with South Oakleigh located in Southeastern Melbourne’s famous Sandbelt, surrounded by three noted private golf clubs: Metropolitan, Huntingdale and Commonwealth.
After the completion of the South Road extension, Mavis Hutter Reserve was created and contains outdoor gym facilities, a playground, and a granitic sand track which creates a circuit in the park. Other parks in South Oakleigh are Dales and Talbot Parks, Davies Reserve, Bald Hill Reserve and Warrawee Park, all close to South Oakleigh College.
The Olympic Ice Skating Centre is located across the road from South Oakleigh College and other sporting facilities nearby include – GESAC, Oakleigh Sport and Recreation Centre, Oakleigh Indoor Sports Centre and the College itself is used by many sporting clubs offering basketball, soccer and cricket on the weekends and after school.
The Oakleigh shopping precinct, located 2 kilometres from the College is home to more than 280 retailers and service providers. The lively outdoor shopping strip and Oakleigh Central shopping centre comprise a host of food and dining outlets, fashion and beauty stores, giftware and homeware outlets, professional services, and more.
Chadstone Shopping Centre, known as the fashion capital comprises 500 stores, including the new state-of-the-art HOYTS Cinema Complex located 5 kilometres and a 15-minute bus ride from the College.
Westfield Southland a retail complex with approximately 400 retailers is located in the suburb of Cheltenham, 8 kilometres from the College and easy to reach by bus.
Monash University is 2 kilometres to the northeast of the College, easily accessible via public transport services. Other tertiary institutions are located not too far of a distance from the South Oakleigh area, including Melbourne University, Deakin University and Homesglen Institute of TAFE which are accessible via public transport Victoria.
